Do I have to be in the Honors College to be
part of the program?
No. These two programs are separate.
What are the benefits of this program?
CCJS is one of the most popular majors at the University of Maryland.
The CCJS Honors Program provides the opportunity to (1) take small courses that are challenging,
(2) better know your faculty and colleagues, and (3) stand out among a sea
of other applicants when you apply to graduate school or law school.
This program gives you the opportunity to have a small liberal arts experience at a large, state university.
Being part of this program means that you have a
higher probability of getting a recommendation for employment or further
education that is personalized and really “sells you” as a candidate.
Simply, the faculty are more likely to know you as a whole person, rather
than simply a student who got a particular grade in a course of 75 people.
At the same time, prospective jobs or schools will see that you are capable
of handling graduate coursework at the top ranked graduate school in
criminology and criminal justice in nation, which is a rare attribute among
undergraduates. They will also see that you actively sought out membership
in this program, illustrating a clear desire for an academic challenge. All
of these factors will set you apart from other applicants and call attention
to your particular skills, talents and ambition.
Can I still study abroad if I join the
program?
Yes, if you plan to do so in the second semester of your junior year.
Please contact the Director, Dr. McGloin, for the specifics of how this can be accomplished.
If I join the program, does this mean I will
graduate with honors?
Yes. Students who complete the Departmental
CCJS Honors program are recognized at the CCJS graduation (both when they
receive their diploma and in the pamphlet). These students are the
only ones who graduate with departmental honors.
What if my GPA falls below the requirements
while I am in the program?
Unfortunately, if your overall GPA falls below
3.25 or your major (CCJS) GPA falls below 3.4, you will have to withdraw
from the program.
Can my graduate class count as graduate
credit if I enroll in graduate school?
If you meet all the credit requirements for
graduation and the graduate class is essentially “extra” credit, you may
apply for this course to count as graduate credit. Whether graduate schools
accept this credit towards their respective program requirements is their
discretion. Given the national reputation of our graduate program, however,
there is a good probability they will do so.
I have additional questions. Who can I ask?
Please contact the Director of the program, Dr.
Jean McGloin, at 301.405.3007 or
jmcgloin@crim.umd.edu.
