Our faculty are active in professional associations and
academic forums and have served in a variety of positions at the American
Society of Criminology, including that of president, vice-president, and
executive secretary. They participate actively in National Academy of Science
panels and scientific commissions, and are regularly asked to sit on review
panels for major governmental and non-governmental research organizations. They
also have served as Editor-in Chief, Associate Editor, and editorial board
members for every major criminology and criminal justice journal. Many are
Fellows in professional organizations and have received numerous awards and

Brooks, Laure
|
Laure Brooks is an Instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the University of Maryland’s Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She received her Ph.D, M.A., and B.A. all from the Criminology Department at the University of Maryland. She teaches the undergraduate research methods course and a course on police administration. Her research interest is in the area of policing where she has studied police discretion, police stress, and violence against police. Dr. Brooks was the recipient of the 1999 College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Excellence in Teaching Mentorship Award.

Dugan, Laura
|
Dr. Dugan is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She received her Ph.D. in Public Policy and Management in 1999 from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. She also has a Masters of Science in Statistics and one in Public Management and Policy. She is a member of the National Consortium on Violence Research, the Maryland Population Research Center, and the National Center for the Study of Terrorism and the Response to Terrorism.

Gottfredson, Denise
|
Denise C. Gottfredson is a Professor at the University of Maryland Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. She received a Ph.D. in Social Relations from The Johns Hopkins University, where she specialized in Sociology of Education. D. Gottfredson's research interests include delinquency and delinquency prevention, and particularly the effects of school environments on youth behavior. Much of Gottfredson’s career has been devoted to developing effective collaborations between researchers and practitioners. She recently completed randomized experiments to test the effectiveness of the Baltimore City Drug Treatment Court and the Strengthening Families Program in Washington D.C.

Johnson, Brian
|
Brian D. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. He received his Ph.D. in Crime, Law & Justice in 2003 from the Pennsylvania State University. His dissertation was entitled “The Multilevel Contexts of Criminal Sentencing.” It was supported by the Forrest Crawford Fellowship for Ethical Inquiry and received the Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Award. Dr. Johnson has received awards for his scholarship from both the American Society of Criminology and the American Sociological Association.

Kirk, David
|
David Kirk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, which he joined in 2006 upon earning a doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago. Prior to his time at the University of Chicago, Kirk worked at the Urban Institute, where he researched issues related to criminal justice policy. Kirk’s current research explores the influences of various social contexts on delinquency and violence, particularly with respect to neighborhood context. One ongoing project compares the effects of neighborhood and school social organization on youth offending. He also just completed the first phase of a project exploring prisoner reentry in New Orleans pre- and post-Hurricane Katrina. In this research, Kirk utilizes a natural experiment to examine the implications of residential mobility on the likelihood of recidivism.

LaFree, Gary
|
Gary LaFree is Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and a founding member of the Democracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland, College Park. Much of his recent work has dealt with national and international macro-level crime trends. He has published widely in the social sciences, including a 2000 edited book titled The Nature of Crime and a 1998 book titled Losing Legitimacy: Street Crime and the Decline of Social Institutions in America.

Laub, John
|
John H. Laub is Distingished University Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. In 1996, he was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology, in 2002-2003 he served as the President of the American Society of Criminology, and in 2005 he received the Edwin H. Sutherland Award from the American Society of Criminology. He was named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland for the 2006-2007 academic year.

MacKenzie, Doris
|
Doris Layton MacKenzie, Ph.D., is Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland and Director of the Evaluation Research Group. Prior to this position she earned her doctorate from Pennsylvania State University, was on the faculty of the Louisiana State University where she was honored as a "Researcher of Distinction," and was awarded a Visiting Scientist position at the National Institute of Justice. In 2007, she was a Fulbright REsearch Scholar in China.

McGloin, Jean
|
Jean McGloin received her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University in 2004, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. Dr. McGloin's dissertation work involved an analysis of the social structure of street gangs in Newark, New Jersey. Her broad research interests include criminological theory, groups and crime, and policing. She is also the director of the CCJS undergraduate honor's program.

Petras, Hanno
|
Hanno Petras (Ph.D. Sociology, Psychology, Statistics, Christian-Albrechts University 1998) joined the University of Maryland in 2005 and is Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Mental Health as well as a Faculty Associate at the Maryland Population Research Center. Dr. Petras is an invited member of the Prevention Science Methodology Group directed by Drs. Brown and Muthén and a founding Member of the Prevention Science Methodology Group II.

Reuter, Peter
|
Peter Reuter is Professor in the School of Public Affairs (where he directs the PhD program) and the Department of Criminology at the University of Maryland. In July 1999 he became editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. From 1981 to 1993 he was a Senior Economist in the Washington office of the RAND Corporation. He founded and directed RAND’s Drug Policy Research Center from 1989-1993; the Center is a multi-disciplinary research program begun in 1989 with funding from a number of foundations.

Simpson, Sally
|
Sally S. Simpson is Professor and Chair of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research interests include corporate crime, criminological theory, and the intersection between gender, race, class, and crime. She is the chair-elect (08) for the Crime, Law, and Deviance Section of the American Sociological Association, past President of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium and recipient of the Herbert Bloch Award from the American Society of Criminology. Simpson is author of Corporate Crime (co-edited with Carole Gibbs, 2007), Corporate Crime, Law and Social Control (2002, Cambridge University Press), and Of Crime & Criminality (2000, Pine Forge Press). Her recent articles have appeared in Criminology, Justice Quarterly, and Law & Society Review. Her current research examines Corporate Environmental Crime and Regulatory Compliance.

Weisburd, David
|
David Weisburd holds joint tenured positions in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and at the Hebrew University Law School, where he holds the Walter E. Meyer Chair of Law and Criminal Justice. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on Police Policies and Practices and its Working Group on Evaluation of Anti-Crime Programs. He serves as Co-Chair of the Campbell Collaboration Crime and Justice Group, and is Chair of the Research Advisory Committee of the Police Foundation.

Wellford, Charles
|
Charles Wellford has been named a lifetime National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) "in recognition of extraordinary service to the National Academies in its role as advisor to the nation in matters of science, engineering, and health." He was the first criminologist to receive this honor. Dr. Wellford served for six years as chair of the NAS Committee on Law and Justices. Dr. Wellford's most recent research has focused on the determinants of sentencing, and the correlates of homicide clearance.

Dr. Eric Wish is an Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR). Dr. Wish received his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1977. He has published in the areas of substance abuse treatment in therapeutic communities, alcohol abuse, and IV drug use.

Thomas J. (Tom) Bonnar joined the University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice faculty in July 2003. Mr. Bonnar brings more than twenty-seven years experience as a Federal criminal investigator and investigative manager. His area of expertise is complex white-collar crime cases, primarily investigations of fraud and corruption affecting the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Military Services. Dr. Gaston received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the City University of New York He is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park and an international criminal justice consultant. Eleven years ago, preeminent expert on crime scene forensics Thomas Mauriello built six dioramas to help him teach his crime lab students to "peel" a crime scene. Brian Wiersema is a research specialist in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and a member of the Violence Research Group. His interests include various aspects of violence and social control (e.g., effects of firearms laws), measurement and data quality, and research methods. He has collaborated in research that has appeared in leading journals of criminology, public health, and medicine.
