Bianca entered the Ph.D. program at the University of Maryland, College Park in 2005. She received her M.A. in sociology (2004) and B.A. in sociology and psychology (2002) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research interests include crime over the life course, criminological theories, immigration, and research methodology. She is currently working on her dissertation comparing patterns of offending among immigrants and native-born individuals across the life-course. This research draws upon two separate datasets capturing information on immigrants, native-born individuals, and criminal involvement gathered during two important periods of immigration to the U.S. (i.e., early 20th century and present day). ...More

Carson, Jennifer Varriale
Jennifer Varriale Carson entered the M.A. program in Fall 2004, and after finishing two years later, stayed on for her Ph.D.(expected in May 2010). She also holds a B.S. in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota. A research assistant at the START center, Jennifer's primary interest is left-wing terrorism. Her work has mainly involved overseeing various data extension and verification tasks on the Global Terrorism Database (GTD). In addition, Jennifer recently finished the construction of a separate database of both criminal and terrorist incidents perpetrated by radical environmental and animal rights groups. Other research interests include policing, gangs, and gender and crime. Jennifer also teaches the introductory course in criminology and supervises the GTD internship program. ...More

Jill entered the PhD program in 2003. Since 2004, she has also been a project manager for the Institute for Governmental Service and Research (IGSR) at the University of Maryland, College Park. She holds an M.A. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland and a B.A. degree with distinction in psychology, cum laude from Boston College. Jill has experience conducting criminological research at the University of Maryland, the Urban Institute, and the Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy. She also has prior work experience as case manager for youth involved with the Juvenile Justice System in Baltimore City. Her research interests include prisoner reentry, community and crime, juvenile justice and delinquency, sentencing, and quantitative methods. Joshua Hinkle entered the doctoral program at the University of Maryland in the Fall of 2005 after completing his Master's degree in the department in May 2005. His research interests include policing and criminological theory. Since August of 2007 he has worked under Dr. David Weisburd as the project director on an NIJ funded randomized experimental evaluation of broken windows policing in three cities in California. Natalie Schell-Busey is a Ph.D. student in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Arizona with an interdisciplinary degree in Sociology, Philosophy, and Spanish. Her research interests include white-collar crime, gender and crime, and criminological theory. Her Master’s thesis, which she completed at the University of Maryland, was titled, “Exploring the Relationship between Profit-Squeeze and Occupational Safety and Health Violations”. Her dissertation research examines the relationship between collective and self-efficacy, and their effects on crime. At Westat, she is Associate Project Director for the Adult Treatment Drug Court Cross-Site Evaluation being conducted for SAMHSA. Eileen has experience working within the court and correctional systems. For the Pittsburgh Youth Study, she has conducted in-person interviews with incarcerated homicide and drug offenders. She has also mentored inmates planning for re-entry and provided family outreach services on a volunteer basis for Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources of Fairfax, Virginia. Brandon Behlendorf is currently a second year Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland, where he serves as the geocoding coordinator for the Global Terrorism Database at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. He is current working on several projects with faculty and other students, including an examination the effects of foreclosures on neighborhood levels of crime, assessing the help-seeking behavior of victims of intimate partner violence in a cross-national sample, and understanding the situational determinants of maritime piracy and armed robbery at sea. Prior to coming to the University of Maryland, he was a researcher with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, where he conducted a multi-agency evaluation of a commercial vehicle diversion program and assisted in the creation of risk management programs and assessments for the Ohio Department of Public Safety. He earned his BS in 2003 from St Stephen’s College, New Delhi and an MA in Social Work in 2005 from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. For the next three years he worked with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, an international NGO headquartered in New Delhi. He was Project Officer of a team that initiated a field action project on police-community relations in Chhattisgarh, a state in central India marked with violent confrontation between government and left-wing extremists (Maoists). His other tasks included conducting human rights training programs for police officers, policy advocacy on police reforms in Commonwealth countries and running campaigns in rural areas sensitizing people about their civil and political rights.
