Interns in CCJS must meet the following criteria:

  1. Interns must be CCJS majors
  2. Interns must have completed a minimum of 56 credits at the time of application.
  3. Interns must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of application.
  4. Interns must work 40 hours per credit over the course of the semester.
  5. A maximum of 6 internship credits per semester and a total of 12 internship credits overall will be permitted.
  6. Interns must register themselves for the internship prior to the end of the semester's schedule adjustment period. Obtaining Departmental approval for the internship does NOT register the student for the class.
  7. Internship credit will not be approved for current or previously held jobs.

Requirements for Internship Placements

The internship must be a learning experience involving work in a criminal justice or criminological setting. Interns are expected to gain valuable information which will add to their overall understanding of the field of criminology and criminal justice. Internship positions must center around the gaining of new material over the course of the semester and are expected to involve some degree of ongoing training/learning for the intern.
Internship placements are subject to the approval of the Internship Director.

Requirements for Interns

Interns are responsible for arranging their own internships. Information concerning participating agencies may be obtained from the CCJS Advising office (2203 Lefrak Hall), searched for Online, or the student may find an internship position on their own. The Agency Supervisor and the prospective Intern must fill out a placement form and bring it to the Internship Director for approval. Once the internship is approved, the student must register for the internship class (CCJS 359 or CCJS 398).

Interns are required to work 40 hours per credit over the course of the semester. Interns are required to keep a daily log which includes the date, times, and a description of the activities the intern engaged in each day of the internship (approximately ½ page handwritten on average). This log will be turned in at the end of the internship and evaluated as part of the intern's grade. The intern also needs to complete a term paper comparing the internship experience with what the intern has learned in his/her academic studies. This paper is to be 5-7 typed double spaced pages and will be part of the intern's grade.

ALL MATERIAL (DAILY LOG, TERM PAPER, AND SUPERVISOR'S EVALUATION) IS DUE TO THE INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR ON OR BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF CLASSES IN A SEMESTER (not the last day of finals).

If any problems or concerns occur over the course of an internship, please contact the Internship Coordinator:  Advising office at advising@crim.umd.edu
