     Our faculty are active in professional associations and academic forums and have served in a variety of positions at the American Society of Criminology, including that of president, vice-president, and executive secretary. They participate actively in National Academy of Science panels and scientific commissions, and are regularly asked to sit on review panels for major governmental and non-governmental research organizations. They also have served as Editor-in Chief, Associate Editor, and editorial board members for every major criminology and criminal justice journal. Many are Fellows in professional organizations and have received numerous awards and honors.

Brooks, Laure
Laure Brooks is an Instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the University of Maryland’s Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She received her Ph.D, M.A., and B.A. all from the Criminology Department at the University of Maryland. She teaches the undergraduate research methods course and a course on police administration. Her research interest is in the area of policing where she has studied police discretion, police stress, and violence against police. Dr. Brooks was the recipient of the 1999 College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Excellence in Teaching Mentorship Award. ...More

Dugan, Laura
Dr. Dugan is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She received her Ph.D. in Public Policy and Management in 1999 from the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. She also has a Masters of Science in Statistics and one in Public Management and Policy. She is a member of the National Consortium on Violence Research, the Maryland Population Research Center, and the National Center for the Study of Terrorism and the Response to Terrorism. ...More

Gottfredson, Denise
Denise C. Gottfredson is a Professor at the University of Maryland Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. She received a Ph.D. in Social Relations from The Johns Hopkins University, where she specialized in Sociology of Education. D. Gottfredson's research interests include delinquency and delinquency prevention, and particularly the effects of school environments on youth behavior. Much of Gottfredson’s career has been devoted to developing effective collaborations between researchers and practitioners. She recently completed randomized experiments to test the effectiveness of the Baltimore City Drug Treatment Court and the Strengthening Families Program in Washington D.C. ...More

Johnson, Brian
Brian D. Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. He received his Ph.D. in Crime, Law & Justice in 2003 from the Pennsylvania State University. His dissertation was supported by the Forrest Crawford Fellowship for Ethical Inquiry and received the Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Award. In 2008 Dr. Johnson recieved the American Society of Criminology Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award. His current research interests include contextual variations in sentencing, racial and ethnic relations in society, and the use of advanced statistical modeling techniques to study criminal processes. ...More

LaFree, Gary
Gary LaFree is Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice and a founding member of the Democracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland, College Park. Much of his recent work has dealt with national and international macro-level crime trends. He has published widely in the social sciences, including a 2000 edited book titled The Nature of Crime and a 1998 book titled Losing Legitimacy: Street Crime and the Decline of Social Institutions in America. ...More

Laub, John
John H. Laub is Distingished University Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University. In 1996, he was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology, in 2002-2003 he served as the President of the American Society of Criminology, and in 2005 he received the Edwin H. Sutherland Award from the American Society of Criminology. He was named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland for the 2006-2007 academic year. ...More

Jean McGloin received her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University in 2004, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland. Dr. McGloin's dissertation work involved an analysis of the social structure of street gangs in Newark, New Jersey. Her broad research interests include criminological theory and groups and crime. Peter Reuter is Professor in the School of Public Policy and the Department of Criminology at the University of Maryland. He served as editor of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management from 1999-2004. He founded and directed RAND's Drug Policy Research Center from 1989-1993. ...More

Simpson, Sally
Sally S. Simpson is Professor and Chair of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research interests include corporate crime, criminological theory, and the intersection between gender, race, class, and crime. She is the former Chair of the Crime, Law, and Deviance Section of the American Sociological Association, past President of the White-Collar Crime Research Consortium and recipient of the Herbert Bloch Award from the American Society of Criminology. She serves on the Board of the Criminal Justice Information Advisory Board and the Police Training Commission for the State of Maryland. Simpson is an honorary Fellow in the American Society of Criminology and, in 2008, was named Distinguished Scholar by the Division on Women and Crime, American Society of Criminology. ...More

Terence P. Thornberry, Ph.D., is Professor, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. He was formerly Director of the Problem Behavior Program at the Institute of Behavioral Science and Professor of Sociology, University of Colorado and prior to that Distinguished Professor and Dean at the School of Criminal Justice, University at Albany, State University of New York. In 1995 he was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology and in 2008 he was the recipient of that society’s Edwin H. Sutherland Award. Dr. Thornberry is the recipient of numerous other awards including the President's Award for Excellence in Research at the University at Albany, the Justice for Children Award from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and was an invited lecturer at the White House Conference on Helping America’s Youth in 2005. ...More

Wellford, Charles
Charles Wellford has been named a lifetime National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) "in recognition of extraordinary service to the National Academies in its role as advisor to the nation in matters of science, engineering, and health." He was the first criminologist to receive this honor. Dr. Wellford served for six years as chair of the NAS Committee on Law and Justices. Dr. Wellford's most recent research has focused on the determinants of sentencing, and the correlates of homicide clearance. ...More

Bonnar, Thomas J.
Thomas J. (Tom) Bonnar joined the University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice faculty in July 2003. Mr. Bonnar brings more than twenty-seven years experience as a Federal criminal investigator and investigative manager. His area of expertise is complex white-collar crime cases, primarily investigations of fraud and corruption affecting the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Military Services. Fisher, Cortney Lyn
Cortney entered the PhD program in the Fall of 2005, after receiving a B.A. from Penn State University in International Politics and a JD from New England School of Law. After spending three years representing victims of crime, particularly homicide and rape survivors, in the criminal justice system, Cortney returned academia to pursue her PhD at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include the role of the victim and victim advocacy in the criminal justice process, issues related to violence against women, and criminal law. Shawn M. Flower, Ph.D. is a lecturer for the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Shawn received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, College Park in August 2007. Shawn is the Principal Researcher for Choice Research Associates, providing criminal justice research services that focus on issues of prisoner re-entry, female offenders, community corrections, and program evaluation which employ rigorous methodologies. Mauriello, Thomas
Eleven years ago, preeminent expert on crime scene forensics Thomas Mauriello built six dioramas to help him teach his crime lab students to "peel" a crime scene. He invented scenarios and then meticulously fabricated the clues and their setting. Soulé, David A
David Soulé is the Executive Director of the Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy (MSCCSP). He earned both a Ph.D. and MS degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland. Prior to his appointment at the MSCCSP, Dr. Soulé served as a research associate with the University of Maryland where he was a co-principal investigator and program manager for a statewide evaluation examining the influence of after school programming on juvenile delinquency and victimization. Dr. Soulé has presented at a variety of national conferences including the American Society of Criminology annual conference, the Society for Prevention Research, and the National Sentencing Policy Institute. Additionally, he has served as principal author or co-author for published articles in a variety of academic journals, including most recently in Justice Quarterly, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Criminology and Public Policy and Columbia Law Review. He also served as a consultant on a National Institute of Justice (NIJ) seminar examining incapacitation effects.
